Bill Murray is the modern Scrooge in the classic epic done yet again. I remember a reviewer giving it a uncouth rating because he said it seemed as though Murray’s character really didn’t like people. Helllooo, isn’t that what actors are supposed to do? This version of the customary Chrsitmas record is a capable retelling of the legend. Murray is mean to everyone including his only brother (played by his accurate younger brother) . The 3 spirits that visit Frank Horrible (Murray’s role) are wacky to say the least. Carol Kane plays the ghost of Christmas explain and is probably the funniest of the spirits. Murray has this act down pat. He’s a large t.v. exec and fires Elliot Laudermilk (Bobcat Goldthwait) fair for disagreeing with him. By the method, his fires Laudermilk on Christmas eve.

Alfre Woodard plays his longsuffering assistant and tries to be Cross’ conscience since he doesn’t have one of his maintain. In the visit to Christmas past we learn that television played the biggest role in raising him since his parents weren’t the greatest in the world. Christmas doesn’t mean grand because his parents didn’t achieve up Christmas lights, capture a tree or fetch him presents. There are lots of laughs here as the cast pokes fun at the t.v. industry from late this comedy. The destroy of the film might be a diminutive mushy bit it’s fair here since Faulty is so mean during the rest of the film. He even steals a cab from a petite ancient lady carrying a load of packages. This movie would fit nicely in your holiday collection.

Parents Advisory: There is no nudity or sex. However, there is a cramped bit of unfavorable language. It may frighten very young children. I suggest a viewing age of at least thirteen.

Since the first time I ever saw this movie, I have watched it a few times a year, never wearisome of the current steal on the Dickens classic. Bill Murray is excellently cast as cool hearted TV exec Frank Depraved and with each scene, the movie draws you ever-closer to the Christmas feeling.

I seek this EVERY Christmas Eve and no matter how dreadful a year you’ve had, by the time this movie finishes and it’s time to go to bed before Father Christmas comes, you’ll be in the fair Spirit of the Season.

I’ve yet to meet someone who doesn’t lean towards this as their movie of choice for the festive period. And now… I finally accumulate to gaze it on DVD!

My review is purely from a parent’s perspective:

I have twoboys, 9 and almost 11. They worship Pokemon. They loved Ninja Turtles,Power Rangers, Star Wars, etc. so you know they are prone to being led by commercialism. Pokemon encourages nurturing, caring, and ideals like honesty, acceptance, and forgiveness. The fine trainers protect and care for Pokemon. The dreadful guys exploit them and do their possess selfish motives ahead of the Pokemon. The middle-can-be-turned-around characters learn from their mistakes and are forgiven by the main characters. Even Jessie and James occasionally display remorse and are treated with compassion.

Do Pokemon battle? Yes. Unlike Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and Star Wars, however, a Pokemon doesn’t have to be damage or killed to be defeated. Their weapons are inner strengths that they are born with. And no trainer worth his salt lets his Pokemon accumulate injured. It’s not hard to capture the lessons from Pokemon and apply them to the reality of the child.

It’s like Beanie Babies — I know they’re making a fortune leading our kids around by the nose. But it’s relatively benign and I leer every video with them to beget determined nothing changes. On a long slither in the truck, I let them play the two CD’s — the music is actually very toothsome for me (and I’m 46!) and contains no poor language.

And I liked Pikachu’s Vacation film worthy better than the staunch Pokemon movie… but my boys loved both!

This movie is exellent! I loved it at the theaters. It was so chilly watching Mewtwo and Mew fight it out. Another thing that was wintry is Pikachu Vacation mini movie. I got some loyal laughs over there though their really was unprejudiced only pokemon. The best portion is when Raichu and Pikachu battle it out in a urge. It also showed some pokemon from Gold and Silver. But even if you saw it at the theaters… Tranquil Engage IT. Chances are that you didn’t pick up a card but when you lift the VHS or DVD you score the Mewtwo Promo card (I judge it’s a promo card. If not unbiased know that it is a Mewtwo, and it has the same attacks of the promo Mewtwo.) with a different represent. You also win both Mewtwo Strikes Help and Pikachu’s Vacation and a bonus….. A PREVIEW OF THE SECOND MOVIE!

I had the privilege of seeing this wonderful film last week at the AFI Silver Theater, which recently ran a month-long tribute to the tedious, sizable director Elia Kazan. Kazan is principal for his collaborations with a young Marlon Brando, directing the rising star in three films during the early 50s: “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Viva Zapata!” and the masterpiece “On the Waterfront.” Many film critics do “Baby Doll” just slack “On the Waterfront” when ranking Kazan’s filmography. Having seen it, I would likely do the same (though I haven’t seen all of Kazan’s films yet) .

Eli Wallach, who plays Silva Vaccaro in “Baby Doll,” was on hand to introduce the film at the AFI Silver. He spoke for about 45 minutes and, though he’s in his 80s, had the audience (about 40 or 50 of us) roaring with laughter. I was amazed at how many top actors and directors he’s worked with. He spoke mainly about “Baby Doll,” which he says is his celebrated film.

Here are a few things I learned from Eli Wallach about “Baby Doll”: His hands were NOT anywhere reach Carroll Baker’s private parts during the notoriously erotic swing scene, as reported in many a film review at the time. Rather, they were resting on a dwelling heater; though “Baby Doll” takes station in the heat of summer, the film was shot during winter. In fact, the actors had to suck on ice cubes before each engage so their breath wouldn’t point to. Wallach spent more time in the iconic baby crib than Baby Doll herself. This was Wallach’s first film.

“Baby Doll” is based on two one-act plays by Tennessee Williams: “27 Wagons Burly of Cotton” and “The Unsatisfactory Supper.” Anyone familiar with Tennessee Williams knows that his writing is very southern and very steamy. “Baby Doll” may be the steamiest, most erotic thing he ever wrote.

The owner of a private cotton gin, Archie Lee, has his hands beefy with “child bride” Baby Doll, who sleeps in a crib and won’t let her husband touch her until she turns 20. With her birthday in a few days, Baby Doll, played by the impossibly-cute Carroll Baker, is threatening to “hold” unless her aging, doltish husband starts raking in the dough. After their furniture is hauled off, Lee, played by Karl Malden, sets fire to the recent cotton gin that’s been taking away his business. Silva Vaccaro, a firey Sicilian businessman played by Eli Wallach, vows to trusty revenge on the person who burned down his gin. Suspicions lead him directly to Lee’s doorstep where, over the course of an afternoon, he proceeds to slay the man’s life.

The heart of the movie is Vaccaro’s seduction of Baby Doll. No flesh is ever shown, nothing explicit is ever uttered and I fill there’s only one kiss in the entire film. Regardless, this is some of the hottest, most erotic footage in American film. The dialogue, the acting, the arrangement it’s directed: the overall achieve is like watching passionate sex, yet it’s simply two people talking – and they’re not even talking about sex! To me, this type of filmmaking is magical, when the director conjures something out of thin air that isn’t even there.

“Baby Doll” was highly, highly controversial upon its release in 1956. It was condemned by The Legion of Decency, an organization of the Roman Catholic Church, who claimed that it was unsuitable. Because of the hype, it was withdrawn from over 70 percent of U.S. theaters before its premiere. Several film critics at the time called it the most pornographic film ever released by a film studio. Today however, very few would likely catch in a fuss over it.

“Baby Doll” is a big film that now ranks among my favorites of all time. It’s not only sexy, but very comical, well-acted, well-written and expertly directed. It may seem a miniature dated to most current viewers, but I personally consider it holds up quite well (but then, I do explore a lot of stale films.) If and when “Baby Doll” is produced for DVD, I hope the studio considers Eli Wallach for the audio commentary.

This review isn’t of the big movies contained but the DVD plot and their respective presentations.

first..let me say the bonus DVD “Tennesse Williams South”…is exceptional..its a film made about and with him in 1974 and besides his acquire readings of his work, which are illuminating, it features legends like Burl Ives and Jessica Tandy re-creating his dialog..simply timeless!

now..onto the Discs/Movies

the bonus featurettes are all very well done however, seemingly shorter than they should/could be. By that I mean…they have modern interviews with Karl Malden and Eli Wallach for BABYDOLL and Rip Torn for Sweet Bird of Youth and the ever attractive Jill St John for The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, and yet the amount of face time these accurate stars of the films in demand bag is barely a line here or there? Not that the featurettes aren’t proper…they are..it impartial seems they could be a could 10minutes longer each…

now…the opposite pickle is in the second disc of Streetcar Named Desire….the feature length (90min) Elia Kazan: A directors Scurry is unbelievable..its a decade or so mature but was done while he was calm with us and his participation raised it above the level of talking heads documentaries of the day. The outlandish thing is that the original featurettes on this disc feature procedure too powerful culled from the aforementioned feature. I don’t understand….WB has fantastic featurettes on all the movies that seem truncated and then BLOATS out the Streetcar featurettes with duplicate material from itself? Only the recent footage of Karl Malden saves the Streetcar featurettes from their believe plagerism.

Now..the films themselves are all in very beneficial shape considering they go relieve half a century. I wasn’t a particular fan of Tennesse Williams..but after viewing all these films and the bonus film…i most certainly effect him in the genius category and am looking for more.

Also, the press is making a astronomical deal about Marlon Brando’s shroud test which is being included in the Streetcar DVD bonus features…its only a curiosity, not fantastic by any stretch. What is far more entertaining is Karl Malden’s resplendent memories of his friendship and admiration for Mr Brando….truly touching and mezmorizing. Malden is a like of an actor who starred in more ravishing films than any but the most ardent fan would know as he was usually second billed…but he IS the star of this position.

Great American films and unlike Universals shameless packaging..WB continues to explain these types of films lovingly with extras..oh yeah..and the commentaries aren’t abominable either…worthy to delight in in this plot.

One of the most heartbreaking scenes in this movie is when Vale takes Zaineb and Tarek’s mother Moona (Hiam Abbass) to Staten Island. The women, who are both illegal, sight the Statue of Liberty in all her glory. Zaineb relates how Tarek, who is now in detention, outmoded to scoot the ferry and jump up and down every time Lady Liberty came in look pretending it was the first time to be in America.

Vale, who’d failed piano lessons four times, learns there’s music in everyone’s soul. If you can’t play the piano, fade on to another instrument until you acquire one whose music is in sync with your possess rhythm.

My husband and I left “The Visitor” wishing there was more, hoping that there was a obedient outcome for the characters. At first, I concept the film’s title was blandly generic in describing those who are here from other lands, but I realize now that the visitor is really Walter as he discovers his soul. The last shot is memorable and captures the fury of his passion with potent force. Strongly recommended.

Ricky and Julian are two criminals from Sunnyvale Trailer Park in Nova Scotia. They can’t seem to figure life out, so they sustain doing what they do best: Coming up with often rediculous and always illegal ways to glean rich fleet. Sometimes it works, sometimes they find caught, but one factor always remains: They never salvage to sustain the cash. Something always happens.

Bubbles is their innocent best friend, yet also their sometimes unwilling partner in crime. Bubbles is arguably the most humorous and most common character on the expose.

Mr. Lahey and Randy urge Sunnyvale — or try to, while Ricky, Julian and Bubbles drive them to drink and drugs. Lahey may be an ex-cop, but that doesn’t mean he follows the letter of the law.

Other supporting characters include J-Roc and T, Sunnyvale’s acquire rap artists who try to execute the expansive time, and beget “greasy” adult films. Lucy and Sarah are sometimes allies, but more often antogonists to Ricky and Julian. They usually mean well, but often cause problems for the boys. Trinity gets into wretchedness sometimes, but Bubbles and the boys will always be there to protect her. And let’s not forget Conky….

The writing on this exhibit is, quite frankly, deceptively shiny. Ricky’s dialogue in particular is quite well written and delivered. Retract this line for example: “Providences like Texas and Calgary have all the oil.” There’s three jokes true there in one line, if you care to bewitch a behold. For fans of Canadiana, this is a must. Any indicate that has Helix, April Wine, and Rita McNeil references is OK by me. (Peruse for cameos by Canadians such as Rita, Brian Vollmer from Helix, Sebastian Bach of Skid Row, and Alex Lifeson of Hasten.)

Bonus features abound, including alternate takes (some funnier than the takes they ancient), unhurried the scenes features, deleted scenes, and…yes!…the Tragically Hip video for “The Darkest One”. Not only is it a colossal song (one of my Hip favourites) but the video takes site in Sunnyvale. In addition to the Hip, the video stars Ricky, Julian, Bubbles, a whole bunch of kitties, and Don freakin’ Cherry. A masterpiece music video.

While attractively packaged in a cooler bag, I cannot give this location 5 stars. The reason being is that for a state called “Complete” it is missing some essentials.

1. The Christmas episode.

2. The final episode “Say Goodnight To The Dreadful Guys”.

3. A couple documentaries that aired on TV.

There’s also the current pilot which has never been released on DVD, and a short called Cart Boy (but I have been told it’s on the first season as an Easter egg) .

Still, if you have no Trailer Park Boys yet, this is an positive no-brainer. Even Ricky could figure out that this is the method to go.

Four stars — five for the point to, minus one for not including the above episodes.

The Trailer Park Boys…what can I say…if you score the white trash street humor you will appreciate it, if you don’t you won’t like it. This series is a “mockumentary” that follows hapless knuckleheads and all of their trailer park neighbors through daily life. Their whole life is about scams, smokin’ and growin’ “dope” (weed), going to jail and fighting with the trailer park supervisor, who is an alcoholic primitive cop who treats the park as his city. It is hilarious from inaugurate to conclude. The actors are so suited, you actually would hold they are as lifeless as they appear in point to, but vivid is more the description. I highly recommend getting the entire series and notice from the first episode to let the characters obtain, you will not be disappointed. If you’re hesitant to lift the entire series, rent from fetch flix first and scrutinize if you like the trailer park humor. There are also many clips on you tube.

From the very beginning, Kung Fu Panda had me practically falling out of my seat — laughing. It was the perfect blend of comedy, heart, and action, all famous elements in a successful and big animation/CGI film, in the tradition of The Incredibles and (less action, but containing the heart and laughter) Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc.

I was laughing, smiling, and guffawing at Po, the main protagonist (voiced by Jack Shadowy) and his misadventures at becoming a Kung Fu expert. This was certainly a flawed character, one that a lot of people can narrate to because he dreams, he’s humorous, and he can laugh at himself. Also, the record was shapely certain and easy to follow because the storytelling was well crafted, and the animation was paired well with characters brought vividly to life by some of the most famed names in Hollywood.

Jack Shaded and Dustin Hoffman are downright superb as the main characters, and Ian McShane as the poor dude gave it the correct stupefied presence. Other vast name stars don’t shine as distinguished, but that’s because their roles are rather diminutive in the film. But that’s mild okay because the animators should be given equal credit (if not more) for delivering the comic, action and heart elements of this movie in an effective, fantastic and (I’ve got to consume this) AWESOME manner. Visually, this movie is elegant (see all those scenic shots of the Chinese mountains, bodies of water, and the bridge scene; not to mention the action animation version of “The Matrix” with slow-mo) … simply a delight to study.

It’s distinct that Dreamworks has gotten relieve in the animation game with Kung Fu Panda, after diminutive ho-hums in Shrek 3 and Bee Movie (call me crazy, but I liked Over The Hedge more than those two) . Hopefully, it should obtain well over $500M worldwide because it is so qualified.

This movie rightfully belongs in the top animation movies of all time (okay, let’s not include the classic fairy tales of old; let’s open with the 90’s onwards), alongside my faves “The Incredibles” “Finding Nemo” and “Beauty & The Beast.” Has the makings of being a classic.

With deep foreboding, I walked into this movie braced for second rate animation (at least compared to Pixar), endless fights between cartoons (as in the CGI “Clone Wars”), and a cultural sensitivity that was either painfully preachy (like “Mulan”) or outright insulting (like “Aladdin”) .

At first, my apprehension seemed confirmed. Abominable Dustin Hoffman mangles Chinese names without mercy – so distinguished so that James Hong, Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan have to deliberately mispronounce stuff objective to match what he says.

But once the movie got rolling, I found myself grinning from ear to ear in sheer delight. Yes, it’s proper, Dreamworks can’t compete with Pixar’s technology, but they earn up for it with ravishing graphic make, sheer wit and – of course – those hilariously quivering “Scrat Eyes”. What’s more, the animators somehow manage to perform Kung Fu battles between cartoons both provocative and appetizing – every bit the match of live action fights (which nowadays are nothing more than CGI with faces pasted on) .

However, the most noteworthy thing about this film is how faithful it is to Chinese culture – family dynamics, Buddhist philosophy, values, and even martial arts – this film simply HAS to have been written by Chinese. There is never a moment where it strains to “fetch points” with political correctness. Its characters are never tediously splendid “anti-stereotypes”, but are instead lovingly depicted with all their flaws intact while uniquely Chinese messages are delicately hidden within a spot crammed with excitement and laughter. Here you experience how parental worship turns into suffocating pressure, here you stare teenage rebellion as a monstrosity rather than a virtue, here you examine the quirky characters of a city (complete with that wobbly “chase foot” move), here you hear the wisdom of Zen detachment, and here you experience the sacred relationship between student and teacher.

Perhaps my belief is biased by the surprise this movie gave to my obscene expectations, but I can’t back but ogle this film as an unappreciated but precious gem. Now if only someone could do the same thing with Islamic culture…!

The best things about this heavily formula vehicle are (1) Elvis’ opening production numbers (including a nicely staged “Adam And Rank”) ; (2) Deborah Walley’s “girl drummer” role; (3) the Deusenberg; and (4) Elvis’ closing production number, the medium walking blues “I’ll Be Abet”. Everything else is redundant.

Hooray, SPINOUT on DVD at last! One of Elvis’ 60s movies, about which all you can say is, if you like them, you like them. Somewhere along the draw, Elvis stopped really caring about everything except Gladys, and the scripts suffered. They were all the same with plenty of innuendo, but not worthy steady sex. Except of course that sex is omnipresent in the air, it’s built into each frame of film like a poltergeist nimbus in a insecure house. SPINOUT features Elvis opposite the perplexing pixie Deborah Walley, who often played a kind of tomboyish girl yearning to be a woman, the parts Debbie Reynolds owned a decade earlier. And yet Walley is extremely sexy, fair not in this film. It went straight to video, apparently because of wretchedness with the company that owned the distribution rights, but if “Wild Hogs” made money, this shouldn’t have had any grief.

The spot involves two museum security guards who’ve fallen in treasure with two paintings, and a third guard who has . . . some other relationship with a statue, destined to be sold to another museum and replaced by agreeable horrific novel art repellent to the guys, namely Christopher Walken, Morgan Freeman and William Macy. By the title you can order what their solution is, so I need say no more about that.

The tone is light, comedic, but there are no steady out-loud laughs, despite best efforts. Obviously the acting is very estimable, the chemistry works, but there are very grand holes in reason and accepted sense. That shouldn’t bother you if you don’t ask too powerful out of the movie, but it’s might be rather annoying at times to some. Aloof, overall it worked reasonably well, too dreadful it didn’t score a chance at the mall.

Central to the powerful cast is the beautiful Gong Li as the Empress. As the catalyst of most of the film’s action, Li is the film’s most pivotal performer. The female center of this “Flower” (which includes Chow Yun Rotund as her husband and their three sons/heirs), Li practically devours the role. Elephantine of passion, rage, lust, and plenty of secrets–she has never been given a showier role and definitely rises to the occasion. The performances are so obedient, so alive, you want to stick with the sage to the bitter destroy. And no matter how depraved this film can accept (and the madcap finale certainly pushes veteran sensibilities), it is always grounded with the actors.

Forget Shakespeare’s most violent tragedies, “Curse” sports a body count that even the Bard would surely envy. Not since the wickedly over-the-top killing spree during the finale of DiPalma’s “Scarface” has a movie devolved into such an unabashed exhibit of bloody lunacy. Ridiculous at every turn, the film succeeds by embracing its excesses. The final showdown left me marveling at the staged choreography and laughing at the inspired, yet insane, debauchery. I won’t contend that “Curse” is an artistic masterwork that rivals Yimou’s previous films “House of Flying Daggers” and “Hero”–but I will say that it is massive entertainment. A frantic, blood-soaked opera of lust and vengeance (with no apologies), I loved “Curse of the Golden Flower.” KGHarris, 11/07.

I label that an earlier reviewer saw the ‘making-of’ featurette. and it’s

a apt intro into peeling away the layers of this quasi-Shakespearean melodrama. There’s something dramatists like, the theme of the darkness beneath the beauty.

Slow starting, Director Zhang moves faster and faster telling the story of unfolding faces (in an asian sense) and the complexities of relationships,

veering every so-often in to soap-operatics. Yet with extravagant graphics/ production qualities and a nice pattern of on-and-off action with teary or sneer-y confrontations and trysts, even the maybe too-dramatic elements work well.

One measure might be that in re-seeing, the layers regain more intense and understandable, adding weight to the conflicts; a plus for buyers versus renters.

Now, if only a quality version of RAISE THE RED LANTERN would be released, Zhang Yimou’s stature as a world-class director would be rightly, finally, established. With his successes this millennium, it might fair happen for the man…

Based on Richard Tregaskis’ common book of his tale of the action at Guadalcanal, when the first detachment of U.S. Marines landed in the Solomon Islands in August of 1942, this is a tough and gritty war film with a sturdy ensemble cast, who do a unbelievable job of recreating the diverse characters in the chronicle, from Anthony Quinn who dreams of his señoritas, to the young Richard Jaeckel, who is always writing home to mom.

Preston Foster, William Bendix, Lloyd Nolan and Richard Conte are the other actors that contribute to produce the film involving, along with the narration by Reed Hadley which contrasts with the everyday speech of the dialogue and at times is quite poetic.

Enduring the humid jungle, often plagued with torrential rain, and at one point running out of food and needing reinforcements, the narrator says of October 10th, “…for we are tired, after days of heat and rain, dust and disease, mud and malnutrition, weeks of constant fighting…”, the film depicts a lot of heroism, the caring for one another, and distinguished patriotism.

The battle cinematography by Charles Clarke is visually tantalizing, though all very sanitized, as none of the intense fighting is graphic, and one must remember that this is a 1943 film, and the language venerable is far from politically correct; those who can’t do it into historical perspective should avoid seeing it.

The movie begins with the dart of the First Marine Divison across the Pacific Ocean aboard transport ships. The Marines’ time was spent either lying on deck, playing cards, or shooting the bull. The lumber was long and monotinous, but the Marines were finally informed of their destination and readied themselves for battle. Upon landing, the Marines spot up a perimeter and place out to retract the enemy. Some of the fiercest fighting of the war occurred on Guadalcanal. Both sides were undersupplied and suffered from lack of food. However, while the Americans were hungry, the Japanese starved. Thus, the island became known to the Japanese as “the island of death”.

After six months of brutal fighting, the Americans finally captured the island. The Japanese managed to capture their remaining troops under the hide of darkness using destroyers.

This movie does a very advantageous job of describing the action which occurred during the battle from the initial landings in August until the Army relieved them in December. The performances by the cast are very edifying, and I especially belief that the narration added some considerable insight to the movie. Also, I was impressed by the historical accuracy of the movie. Each of the early encounters with the Japanese is described, including the battle of Teneru River to the contaminated shelling of Henderson Field by the Japanese Navy. Based on the book by correspondent Richard Tregaskis, “Guadalcanal Diary” does a fair job of telling the chronicle of the First Marine Divison and their struggles during the early days of the Guadalcanal campaign. This movie differs greatly from today’s war movies such as “Saving Private Ryan”. There is no blood and guts death scenes in this movie, as well as no political correctness. Routinely throughout this movie, the Americans refer to the Japanese as “monkeys” and “gooks”. These terms may not be common, but that’s exactly what the Marines called them in 1942-43.

I give this movie my highest recommendation. The characters are realistic and believable, the action is very apt, and the historical correctness is pleasant. Observe this movie and peer how two enemies fought over a strategically necessary island in the South Pacific for six long, brutal months in the early days of World War II.

This season is short but vast. Having said that I have to say that the series is NOT over. It is spellbinding to ABC for season 8. I sustain seeing reviews where it says series ended with season 7. Not fair. It fair ended its hurry on NBC. ABC picked it up for 18 episodes for season 8. Objective had to determined that up.

…because with NBC constantly preempting it and showing it at different times, I judge I saw maybe two episodes from this season. I never knew when it was on. So it’s 11 episodes. It’s peaceful Scrubs and even poor Scrubs is better than 99% of what’s on tv true now. Can’t wait for season 8!
